2018 Nationals Day 3 update
The Australian 505 National Championship has so far had 2 out of 3 days blown out by strong southerlies.
The first day was due to hold the invitation race, which was postponed until Monday due to too much wind.
Monday started the Championship races and we were lucky to have two races in a slightly depleted 40 boat fleet, with some boats staying ashore and at least 10 returning to the club during the first race due to being sensible, knackered or broken!! The wind was 20+ knots average with gusts 30+. Top well known performers showed their style and confidence in the conditions.
1 Mike Holt / Rob Woelfel, 3 times world champ skipper, previous world champ crew
2 Michael Babbage / James McAllister, previous Australian champs
3 Mike Quirk / Joel Castle, multiple Australian champ skipper
4 Mal Higgins / Nick (Camel) Johnston, multiple Sharpie national champs
The top ten will be hard fought this year.
There was some carnage, mainly sails and rudders.
Today, day 2, Tuesday was a blow out, gusting 35+ knots which made for a useful day for the many boats needing repair time after Monday. We even brought forward the AGM and made use of the spare time by having an hour training walk through with Mike Holt and Rob Woelfel on the club park.
Tomorrows forecast looks a bit more manageable and we are hoping for moderating wind.
We will keep you posted with future updates or head to our Facebook page where there is plenty of interviews and videos of crews and picture albums of all the action.
