A resource for current, past and future 505 sailors

The 505 class sailing dinghy is an international design two person, fast, responsive, quick accelerating racing craft. With a trapeze, spinnaker and a large sail plan, the boat offers good competitive tactical racing and is very exciting to sail. grand slideshowl230.jpg The Australian fleets are located in Sydney, Lake Macquarie, Brisbane, Townsville, Bowen, Cairns, Adelaide, Port Vincent, Fremantle, Perth and Melbourne. If you want to get into a 505 please contact the Fleet Captain in your state or email us.

26/3/08 - Missing Trophies

There are 3 perpetual trophies currently missing in action;Delmar Morgan Invitation Race Trophy - this trophy has been missing for some time now.  For those who don't remember it, it is a silver plate.  The Ladies Perpetual Trophy - this trophy went in for repairs in Perth for the Worlds but wasn't presented to Renee de Voogd.  It may have been presented at the Henley Nationals in 2003 to Kate Quinn of QLD, but the only winner since the was at the 2007 Nationals but the trophy wasn't presented. The Teams Trophy - It was presented at the 2007 Nationals in Adelaide to QLD......lots of history here, someone should know where it lies......lets hope no one souvenired it at Brighton. Any information as to the location of these trophies would be greatly appreciated.

25/3/08 Port Vincent - congrats to the local guys for getting the Pt Vinnie fleet up and running. - 5 boats out on the weekend.  Well done to Andrew Slater and Greg Illman - for a while they have been at the back of the fleet making the hotshots look good.  On Sunday they led from start to finish.

Pt Vincent is one of South Australia's premier sailing locations with flat water and plenty of breeze.  The local sailors are very keen to attract the National Fleet to this popular seaside town.

31/01/08 - Message from Earle Alexander

Hi all, After such a great NSW States during the Australia Day long weekend I thought you may be interested in the same deal in Brisbane over 2 weekends.  Come and see if you can knock the defending champ Phil Gray off his mantle.

  • 9 & 10 February at Sandgate Yacht Club – 3 races each day – Saturday 12 noon start, Sunday 10.30 start.  100 metres from Earle Alexander’s house so there will be plenty of people staying, on mattresses etc.  Only 15 minutes from the airport.
  • 16 & 17 February at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron – 2 races each day – Saturday 1.30 start, Sunday 12 noon start.  Billet accommodation at 505 people’s places will be arranged.

Keep in touch if you are thinking of coming so we can make accommodation and any other arrangements (airport pick up) for you.

Best regards, Earle Alexander

15/01/08 - Robbie Duesson and Jordan Spencer win Australia Open at Henley Sailing Club.  The series was down to the last race but a 25knot buster cleared out the fleet with only  2 boats finishing.  Sandy Higgins ripped the rudder of the transom - he is looking for a good supplier of bigger washes!!!.  Pikey and Dan 'wiped out like an out of control surf life saving boat at Manly' in the infamous Henley Shore break.  Sleek now has a shorter mast!  See the South Australian page for results

7/01/08 - Boats for sail section has been updated with 6 new listings around the $4000 to $6000 - a good range of entry level boats.

4/01/08 - NSW State Titles - Message from Andy Hewson

Hi Guys,

Just confirming that the NSW State titles will be held at the Toronto Amateur Sailing Club (Victory Parade, Toronto- Same venue as the nationals from a few years ago) over the Australia day long-weekend.

The outline for the event is as follows:

Friday 25th January- Coaching and tuning

Saturday 26th January- Morning coaching, 2 races in the afternoon

Saturday night- 505 team dinner

Sunday 27th January- Morning coaching, 2 races in the afternoon

Monday 28th January- 1-2 races in the morning; coaching in the afternoon

Free accommodation is available for all travelers (You will be billeted by local sailors from the lake in comfortable accommodation)

There is also safe boat storage available for those of you who'd like to keep their boats at the lake for the February coaching weekend, or as a stepping stone for the nationals.

There are direct flights from both Adelaide and Brisbane into Newcastle. We can pick you up from the airport if required (Ideally you'll travel in a pack to make this easier for us). Alternatively, if you are traveling via Sydney for schedule or budget reasons, then we may be able to arrange transport to the Lake with the Sydney crews.

We will also have cars available for your use whilst you are at the Lake.

For any further queries, feel free to contact me on 0402 185 253.

17/12/07 - NSW State Titles - message from Michael Quirk

Our NSW States are shaping up to be quite an event. At least 4 QLD boats coming and I am organising a training day on the Friday (and Thursday if there is interest)) as well.
Hope some of you guys can join us.

I would like to suggest that if interstate boats make the effort to come the Toronto and Syndey fleest should consider using some of our funds to pay for a class coach for the weekend

Guys,
The Tasar class have bought a bunch of dumb GPS units. They can be put in each boat during a race and then the whole thing can be played back afterwards so one can analyse the race.
I have borrowed/hired 5 of them that I will bring to Coffs. They cost $100 each and the software is downloadable for free from the web site. Since they provide no on-water information they are legal to use while racing.
At the last tasar worlds they had one in all the top boats and replayed the race each evening. Pretty cool. Probably very good for training.

Check this out.  This is why the 505 is the best class for club sailors through to professionals and olympians.

GPS UNITS (from the Qld News Group)

Ian Gregg advised:

We tried using GPS units a few years ago and got some interesting data but there was no really good way to display it. There is now Kattack, see www.kattack.com which looks great.

Their price to be able to put our GPS data into their format is USD 950 per year but we probably only need this once for everyone in Aus to be able to benefit from it.

Their recommended GPS unit is the Garmin eTrex Legend Cx which is AUD 459 from a local shop, see http://www.ja-gps.com.au/garmin_legendcx.aspx
This GPS would also be useful in the car or even on the bike, it might have saved me getting lost in the bush on Mt Nebo a few weeks ago. We would need most or all of the group to get into this to make it worthwhile.  If we get some interest I could try and do a deal on a bunch of the GPS units.

Melbourne Fleet

Delian Mills has just bought a 505 in Melbourne (sail no. 7903) and he is looking for some info on the old Melbourne fleet, can anyone advise Delian?

What was the fleet number? Which yacht club did they sail from? When did the fleet last actively race? He knows of one other 505 that sails out of Hampton sailing club (or at least they did last summer) and he thinks there might be one more still sailing somewhere! There must be a few more still lurking (gathering lots of dust) in garages around Melbourne. Delian is keen to see if he could get a small fleet going again in Melbourne this summer (even just 3-5 boats), so any help/advice/info would be greatly appreciated!  He can contacted sailtech@gmail.com

#8277 which was previously based in southern Queensland is now sailing at Port Kembla SC on Lake Illawarra South of Wollongong NSW. They sailed a few 505s there a number of years ago. New owner Ian Richardson is hoping a few others will joining in at some stage - certainly talking that way !!
