The 2011/2012 NSW 505 State Championships were hosted by Toronto Sailing Club. The forecasted breeze never eventuated and the races were sailed in a shift 10-13 knot North East breeze on Saturday followed by a light 5-8 knot Westerly on the Sunday. 19 boats turned out with entries from South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and the ACT making the trek to Lake Macquarie.
3 races were held on the Saturday with 3 different heat winners keeping the points close. In the first race, Robbie Deussen and Jordan Spencer from South Australia were in the top 2 for the whole race to win a close one from Michael Babbage and James McCallister. 3rd home were the Castle brothers in "Yeah Buddy". In race 2 Babbage and McCallister led early and were challenged in the early stages by Ben Austin and Shane Guanaria before clearing out for an easy win ahead of a fast finishing Deussen and Spencer and Mike Quirk and Simon Reffold. The final race on Saturday was won by Canberra sailors Daniel Keys and Darryl Roos. They lead early and held of challenges from Austin/Guanaria and Deussen/Spencer who eventually finished 2nd ahead of Mike Quirk and Simon Reffold. After 3 races it was Duesson/Spencer on 5 points, Babbage/McCallister on 6, Keys/Roos on 12 Quirk/Reffold and the Castle brothers were tied on 13 with Austin and Guanaria on 14.

Sydney Training Weekend

This weekend is primarily for training and learning about 505s whether you have aspirations to win the Nationals or are new to the class and want to understand the basics.
We are endeavouring to organise coaches to help everyone and there will be a cost of between $50-$100 per boat in addition to subsidy provided by the class associations. To help with organising the weekend I need to know who is coming: Can you please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and tell me:
a. Are you definitely coming?
b. Are you maybe coming?
c. Will you need accommodation?
We will need some coach/mark laying boats, coaches and on water assistants. If you are not sailing and want to help or know someone who wants to help or a coach who wants the gig please let me know.

2011 WA 505 State championships
West Australia
Written by Matt Hansen
The 2011 505 WA state championships were held at RFBYC on the 25th of September with a fleet of 10 competing. 6 races were held using gate starts and windward return courses. Winds were light to moderate and the racing was very tight particularly among the top 8 boats with margins between first and 8th less than a minute in nearly every race. Murray Smith,a veteran of the class, launched his new XSP 505 with a celebrity crew to help him along. Murray and Darren Nicholson finished 2nd in the first race to give everyone a scare and raced consistently to finish a creditable 6th overall. Newcomer Dave Tucker ( a top 15 finisher in the recent flying fifteen worlds in the UK) sailed well to finish 8th in his first 505 regatta.
